Suitable energy for sailing, swimming, day dreaming, escapism, falling in love, creative writing, especially of poetry, theater, performances, movies, concerts, music, crowds, solitude, remembering. Charity, water scrying, astral traveling, past life experiences, déjà vu, psychic awakening, bliss. Purchase of swimming gear, boats, surfboards, pets, alcohol, shoes. Action motivated by the need to accommodate fate, to go with the flow. Gentle poetical expression of feelings, romantic, changeable, ambivalent. Beware of escapism, untruthfulness, drug taking, victimization, passivity, impracticality, phobias, fatalism, lack of discrimination.
The New Moon is the beginning of the Waxing cycle, the sacred marriage of Moon and Sun, Yin and Yang, Night and Day. For three days the Moon becomes invisible. Astrologically we say that the Moon is now conjunct the Sun (on the same degree of Longitude along the Ecliptic). Every month the New Moon occurs in a different Sign. So the Aries New Moon in March/April is always followed by the Taurus New Moon in April/May and so on. New Moons are symbols of new beginning and represent a great time to start something or make important changes in our lives. The energy is right for everything new you would like to try.
Suitable energy for practical activities, making money, business, building, engineering, woodworking, sculpting, pottery, cooking, massage, healing, meditating, contemplating, being still and content, artistic, sensual. All pleasurable activities. Purchase of beautiful objects, furniture, furnishings, clothes, flowers, art works, jewellery, land. Slow, deliberate action, motivated by the desire for security and ease. Determination, use of will power. Affectionate, sensual display of feelings, supportive and loyal. Beware of laziness, self indulgence, stubbornness, intolerance, prejudice, jealousy.
*** In the garden Taurus is considered a fairly productive Sign, especially suitable for Root Crops, like potatoes and carrots, helping to strengthen the root system and to make plants sturdier. It is also a great Sign for Flower Bulbs and other ornamental plants, being sacred to Venus. Great time to be lazy in the garden, lull in a hammock and watch the grass grow.
*** Healing Herbs: Fenugreek, Liquorice, Slippery Elm.

*** In the garden this is traditionally a time to begin sowing and planting because the increasing Moon light will help plants to emerge and flourish. Moisture becomes more and more available as the light of the Moon intensifies, up to the Full Moon. Traditionally however no sowing or planting are recommended within twelve hours of the phase itself.
The Crescent Moon occurs half way through the first week of the Waxing cycle, when the Moon is transiting 45 degrees ahead of the Sun and looks like a beautiful crescent in the western sky after sunset. Psychologically this is an enthusiastic time, in which lots of ideas crowd our mind and we may feel that the sky is the limit. It is a slightly naïve Moon time, but also one full of hopes and dreams (the bright crescent shows now the shadowy sphere of the future Full Moon. The energy of the Moon however needs maturing at this stage and grounding. The first difficulties may appear, the first chinks in the armor; but the challenge is not strong enough yet for us to build up on it.
*** In the garden this is an excellent growing time: everything can go in now, but in particular leafy vegetables and all plants that we grow for their above the ground parts, but only when the Moon is transiting through the very fertile Water Signs or the productive Signs Taurus, Libra and Capricorn.
Suitable energy for taking on challenges, participating in competitions, performing daring feats, arduous exercises, physical work, to begin new ventures, or to perform action for its own sake. Purchase of sporting gear, protective gear, hats, tools, stoves, firewood, machinery, cars, bikes, leather objects. The mood is decisive, enterprising, impulsive, militant, spirited, visionary. Honest, direct expression of feelings, strong instinct, but somewhat insensitive. Beware of emotional extremes, head strong, bossy, uncompromising attitudes, lack of empathy, antagonism, aggression, selfishness.
*** In the garden Aries is traditionally considered too hot, dry and barren for growing anything. Its energy is very suitable instead for cultivating, general maintenance, pruning, pest control, weeding, and harvesting. Plants sown with the Moon in Aries will soon go to seed, due to this Sign’s notorious impatience. Suitable only for early crops.
*** Healing Herbs: Burdock, Gotu Kola, Red Clover.

Today, February 22, the New Moon brings her lunar blessing to Neptune in Pisces (who entered this Sign on February 4, first time since 1848), thus bringing our personal emotions in touch with the collective awareness Neptune imparted on the Sun’s ingress into Pisces on February 19. This is a great deal of Neptunian energy to absorb and integrate in our lives in a short time, considering that Mercury is also transiting Pisces and will do so until March 4 (then again, due to Retrogradation, from March 24 to April 17). Plus Chiron and the Asteroids Pallas (Athena or Minerva) and Vesta (Hestia) are also in Pisces. Like with all planetary energies there are positive and negative sides to Neptune. Of course the more Pisces and Neptune’s energy are highlighted in your Natal or Progressed Chart the more these transits will be significant for you personally. Other Signs in direct line of contact with this New Moon are Cancer, Scorpio, Virgo, Gemini and Sagittarius.
The vibrations of this planet are subtle, especially now that is transiting watery Pisces, so that it is difficult even to describe them. They have the power to inspire a vague longing for something other than what we got, without showing clearly what that is. From these feelings often arise a sense of unidentified discontent that can drain our energies and cause us to become ineffectual in our job or daily tasks, and also dissatisfied with our relationships, without particularly knowing why it should be so. All of this could inspire us to look into the discontent and realize that it is telling us that we need to become more open to the spiritual aspect of life, that we need to stop or slow the daily race in order to be able to listen to the music of our inner world. The nostalgia we feel is for the soulful world of dream, imagination and love that we may have lost sight of in our pursuit of material security in this world or because we needed to fit in somehow. My advice to clients who come to see me during a Neptune’ transit is to try to find time to get out of it all, to be spontaneous, try their hands at art, music, travel, fall in love and forget everything else, practice transcendental meditation or just enter that lull of awareness through which much that we have forgotten may come back to us, including the joy of just being or giving or loving without expectations or strings attached.
If you are already the type of person who values dreams and the symbolical life, if you are an artist or would-be artist, or are already conscious of psychic or mystical tendencies, these transits will suit you well, helping you to pursue these interests in a deeper way; but they could also make you even more dreamy and unpractical (no good if you are trying to get a job or to put your house in order!). On the other hand, if you are mainly a practical person, busy with your family and career, goal oriented and used to get your own way, you could find Neptune and Pisces’ transits a somewhat bewildering experience, bringing you out of your comfort zone, in strange and foggy back alleys, where you feel you could become irreparably lost. Your efficiency level may drop and things which are usually simple for you will seem rather complicated and muddled; or things you always considered in a certain, set way will come under the uncanny scrutiny of a different type of questioning. If this is the case, the best thing to do will be to slow down, learning to relax and to purposely lose control of your situation, now and then, so to realize that things can run their own curse even without your constant intervention. A more spiritual, less straight and controlled life is beckoning, it would be sad if you miss that call. The dissatisfaction about your present circumstances, the lack of direction and low energy are all telling you that there is more to life than chores, business or paying the bills.
Below is the Chart of the Pisces New Moon, calculated for the coordinates of Wollumbin, my place, 11 hours east of Greenwich. The relative positions of Sun, Moon and Planets remain the same all over the world, what changes from place to place is the orientation of the same to the local horizon, above, below, east or west. If you want to convert my standard of time to yours, please visit the World Clock site HERE.
The Sun and Moon are separating from a trine (120 degrees) to Saturn in Libra and applying to a sextile (60 degrees) to Jupiter in Taurus, both positive aspects, helping us to keep our feet on the ground (Saturn) but not so firmly as to lose sight of the lofty aspirations that the Pisces New Moon can bring (Jupiter). The Sun and Moon are also just separating from Neptune while applying to a conjunction to Chiron, aspect that shows the potential for healing emotional and physical ills, and also for perceiving the spiritual message of those circumstances that can’t be healed or changed in our lives, to relinquish our control to powers greater than ourselves. The closest aspect of the Sun and Moon, nearly exact at the time of the phase, is their conjunction to Pallas, one of the four major bodies in the Asteroids belt, orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. This aspect stresses the need for women to become more independent and to fight for what they feel is right, Pallas symbolizing strong and combative women (see the traditional representation of this Goddess dressed in full armor, ready for combat), without losing however that feminine wisdom that has guided women from the beginning of time, a psychic function that Pallas also represents (see the ancient owl resting on her shoulder and the head of powerful Medusa on her shield). The Sun and Moon are also forming a difficult contact with another Asteroid, Juno (Hera) in Sagittarius, showing that trouble in close partnerships and marriage will be brought up to the light during this phase, when deep emotions, love and compassion (Pisces) may antagonize our desire for freedom and independence (Sagittarius). Juno, the mythological wife of Jupiter, the king of all Gods, is in fact the Goddess of marriage and, in particular, of the commitment, duties and responsibilities that such relationship entails. The aspects with the Asteroids just described are reinforced by the transits of Venus (archetype of everything feminine) in fiery and often feisty Aries, active until March 5. Random thoughts on the astrological big picture and also on the personal experience of transits
The other day, writing the post on the Sun entering Pisces and his conjunction to Neptune, I waxed lyrical about all the wonderful possibilities of this otherworldly event. Having had time to reflect on it and further doses of dreadful news from all corners of the planet, I feel the need to put that particular reading in the context of the major planetary configurations also active at this time.
When in Astrology we concentrate on something specific we naturally run the risk of taking a one sided approach to a reality that is in fact multifaceted. This obvious fact doesn’t take away the potential I highlighted for experiencing life in a more holistic way in the next 13 years or so, during the slow transit of Neptune in Pisces. Said that, there is however so much more that can and will stress instead the more divisive and antagonistic approach to collective problem-solving on the planet. I am talking here in particular of the transits of Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn, aspects that are manifesting on a daily basis in more acts of war and mayhem all around the globe. The specter of nuclear proliferation and conflict is rearing its ugly head again in one of the worse ideological and political confrontations in recent years, between arch-enemies Israel, who already possesses a nuclear arsenal, and Iran who is working hard at getting one, despite international condemnation and sanctions. Knowing that the right angle (90 degrees or square) between Uranus and Pluto is still forming and will be with us for a few years puts those dangers in an even more glaring light. What I see here is a further ideological and spiritual division between idealistic people who will accept less and less the old sectarianism and prejudices, embracing a more inclusive view of life, but who also run the risk of aspiring too high and therefore achieving little in the end (Neptune in Pisces), and those instead who either want to uphold the past at any cost (Pluto in Capricorn) and those who are intent at rebelling against it using violence (Uranus in Aries), both, more or less consciously, working against the possibility of peace and reconciliation. All of us though, in one way or another, are upholding some type of change even when we seem to be desperately intent at maintaining the status quo. The world itself is going through a phase of rapid changes (see global warming for instance) so that even the more passive or indifferent amongst us will have to adapt to new circumstances in order to survive, physically and/or psychologically.
Coming back to my own personal experience, and despite all the difficulties indicated by other transits, the soul enhancing effect of the Neptune’s transits has become palpable and very real during my sessions with clients in the last few weeks (one reason why I waxed so lyrical talking about them, I suppose). Magic connections have happened, with clients proving particularly sensitive and open to the inner life described by their Charts, while I have been perhaps more able than usual to convey the message of Astrology in terms that have captured their imagination, filling their and mine sense of longing for a more meaningful life. At first I felt this to be mainly a feminine connection, with women younger, older and the same age as me, but then the same happened with men too, showing that the Spirit is not sexist, bestowing the same gift of insight to anyone who is eager to receive it.

FEBRUARY 28 to MARCH 11: today Saturn is forming an exact aspect to Chiron (135 degrees). This is the second pass of the same transit, Saturn being retrograde. The first pass occurred at the end of December 2010, while the third and last pass will be in September this year. Due to the slowness of the two celestial bodies involved, this aspect, often considered weak, is actually an important and difficult one.
Via Saturn we become aware of what’s really happening in our lives. Often we describe the effect of Saturn’s transits as cyclical reality checks that we need to undergo in order to grow to face life challenges squarely, in an adult, responsible way.
Chiron, on the other hand, always implies the need for accepting the unavoidable, learning to live with it and eventually gaining wisdom from it.
The contact between Saturn and Chiron could then be described as a collective reality check about all those things and experiences that cannot be changed or healed (in a literal sense), but that need to be integrated as painful lessons in one’s life, hopefully helping us to grow in compassion and wisdom.
Becoming responsible (Saturn) for our own emotional burden (Chiron) we may be able to share our knowledge with others going through similar circumstance, because another essential role of Chiron is that of teacher and healer, while Saturn embodies wisdom brought about by well assimilated experience.
This transit seems to be appropriate at this time, when many are mourning loved ones lost in the New Zealand earthquake of February 22. The first funerals were held on the 28th and on March 1st, with the Moon in Saturnine Capricorn, in difficult aspect to Saturn, Chiron, Mars, and conjunct Venus. At the same time Chile has been remembering the 500 who perished in the earthquake of February 28, 2010.
These are indeed difficult realities to acknowledge and accept, but they can also deepen our humanitarian feelings like nothing else can.
MARCH 2: Venus is entering Aquarius today. This month long transit will be more significant for the Air Signs, Aquarius, Gemini and Libra, as well as the other Fixed Signs, Leo, Taurus and Scorpio; or anyone with Moon, Ascendant or Planets in the same Signs. It could in fact help to lighten everyone’s feelings, providing some badly needed perspective on otherwise emotionally confusing, even bewildering times, due to the emphasis on Pisces (Sun, Mercury, Mars, Chiron and the next New Moon).
Aquarius is a more forward looking Sign than Capricorn, the Sign Venus is leaving behind today, Capricorn being inclined to look at the past and to carry past burdens on its shoulders. It can be rather easy to become depressed and lonely during a Venus in Capricorn’s period, because the Love Goddess wears the gray mantle of Saturn there, helping us to gain a more mature views of our relationships and a more serious attitude in many areas of life, while often losing the cheerfulness and joy of living which are the gifts of Venus’ embodiment of divinity.
Via Aquarius we experience friendship, the stirring of new ideas and aspirations, feelings of cooperation, desire to get together with others to pursue similar interests and work toward shared ideals.
Venus’ function is always to foster cooperation and appreciation of each others’ feelings. When transiting the Air Signs her cooperative spirit is stimulated by this Element’s innate desire for communication and team work. With Venus in Aquarius we may all be encouraged to seek such cooperation with a number of people, not just in our own insular, private relationships.

MARCH 5:
PISCES NEW MOON
This New Moon, like the Aquarius New Moon that preceded it, on February 3, found Sun and Moon still in conjunction to Mars, but this time not in such close proximity.
The transits more active at this time are the sextile (60 degrees) Mars-Pluto and the separating square (90 degrees) Jupiter-Pluto.
Thinking of the popular uprising in numerous countries in the Middle East, this New Moon does not promise prompt resolution of these grave issues, but rather more confrontations and struggles against abuse of power and tyranny. Fight to the death to uphold one’s principles is an extreme but possible outcome of these transits. The fact that Uranus is now on the very last degree of Pisces, the most critical of all critical degrees, ready to enter uncompromising and conflict-prone Aries, could only add more fire to the mix.
The large group of celestial bodies in Pisces is working as a medium through which all these planetary energies may more easily spread their influence, as we have seen happening in these troubled countries, each in turn responding to the same call for greater democratic participation and freedom of choice.
Visually retrograded, therefore very slow moving Saturn is on the other side from everything, in Libra, attempting to restore some modicum of balance and fairness in our personal and social relationships.
The third and last opposition to Saturn from Jupiter in Aries is still far away (exact on March 29), but the financial pundits are already talking about another economic downturn. If you were running a retailing shop, like I do, you will know how low consumers’ confidence has reached in recent weeks!
The great awakener Uranus and giant Jupiter with his lightening bolts are found on the Ascendant of the eastern Australia Chart, promising more extreme weather events in this areas. Also the introduction of innovative (Uranus) legislature (Jupiter), like the price on carbon that is, at the moment, getting a lot of publicity on the media. *
