Virgo Moon in the garden

Despite the earthy nature and the ear of corn in the Maiden’s left hand Earthy Virgo is said to be barren, and by most is considered unsuitable for growing. Plants will supposedly grow spindly, tough and woody if planted on the Virgo Moon.
Like other writers though I feel that Virgo should be considered Productive, as the other Earth Signs Taurus and Capricorn, in regard to those Herbs and Plants with proven medicinal and healing properties. This because Virgo is always been associated with hygiene and healing.
The Sign is also great for tidying up the garden and work bee days. Virgo‘s energy is also great for cultivating, general maintenance, fertilizing and harvesting, the latter better after the full moon. Also suitable for pest control, weeding, and pruning, best done after the Last Quarter Phase.

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Trees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Virgo, and also with Mercury, Virgo’s traditional Ruler, the archetypal god of intelligence, movement, adaptability, cunning. Amiable display of feeling, seeking equality, idealistic, cooperative. Beware of indecisiveness, lack of assertion, wishy-washy attitudes, peace at any cost syndrome, vanity, self indulgence.

Libra Moon in the garden

In the garden Libra, unlike the other two Air Signs, Aquarius and Gemini, is traditionally considered fertile and productive. Being a Sign of Venus, goddess of pleasure and beauty, Libra is an ideal Sign to sow and transplant Flowering and Ornamental Plants and Bulbs, and also herbs which help to balance the Elements in the body. Libra encourages bloom, but few seeds.
This could be also an ideal Moon for Garden Parties. Particularly Garden Weddings or Renewal of Vows Ceremonies. And, of course any activity that enhances the garden’s appeal and beauty.

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Tees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Libra, and also with Venus, Libra’s traditional Ruler, the archetypal goddess of love, pleasure, beauty, harmony. All plants that make the garden beautiful, cheerful and sweet smelling, and those whose fruit are pleasant and mild tasting belong to Venus and the Signs she rules.

Edible Plants: many fruit of a red colour, like Cherries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Plums, Apples. Also Almond.

This was on of the reasons the Birch was associated with the feminine archetype of Venus ! But also for its light beautiful bark, a group of such trees lightening the forest in magical ways.

Scorpio is a Water Sign and a very fertile Sign. Everything should do well when planted in Scorpio, if the Moon is in the right phase.
Scorpio is also suitable for propagating cuttings, grafting and deep irrigation. It promotes sturdy roots reaching down deep for moisture. Corn, squashes and tomatoes seem to like particularly to be transplanted when the Moon is in Scorpio.***

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Trees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Scorpio, and also with Mars, Scorpio‘s traditional Ruler, the archetypal god of action, assertion and conflicts. This is why plants with thorns and prickles that they use as weapons against predators are attributed to Mars and the Signs he rules, Scorpio and Aries; same for plants with hot, acrid or sharp taste etc.
Another important connection is that of Scorpio with the sexual organs and functions. So medicinal herbs/plants improving sexual vigor and enhancing libido (aphrodisiacs) and those helpful in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. Balsamic Moon Phase in the garden

    • Note that the garden activities associated with the Moon Sign depend also on the cycle the Moon is in. The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

The Balsamic Moon is certainly no time for planting or sowing, but it is ideal instead for cultivation and soil conditioning, slow release fertilizing, composting, mulching.
It is great week for eradicating pests and unwanted plants and also to prune in order to retard growth, but only if the Moon is transiting a Non Fertile Sign.

Pisces Moon in the garden

In the garden Watery Pisces is very fertile, particularly suitable for growing water plants, like Water Chestnuts and Lotus. It is also a great time for propagating cuttings, grafting, irrigation, pruning to encourage re-growth, but not potatoes that may sprout too soon. This planting however is better left for the period between New Moon and Last Quarter; and no planting/sowing done during the last week of the Lunar Month.

Romantic garden walks, music ensembles, yoga sessions, spiritual gathering, and relaxed picnics could do well too.

For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

The Last Quarter Moon is the beginning of the fourth and last waning week, before New Moon. We should stop all sowing and planting, and concentrate on soil conditioning, cultivation, slow release fertilizing and composting. This phase is suitable also for harvesting and storing fruit and vegetables; as well as getting rid of unwanted weeds and pests, particularly if the Moon transits any of the Fire Signs, or Non Fertile Earthy Virgo, or the Non Fertile Air Signs of Gemini and Aquarius.

In the garden Aquarius, like an other Air Sign, Gemini, is considered too dry and barren for growing anything, but Pine Trees (?).

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Trees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Aquarius, and also with Saturn, Aquarius’ traditional Ruler, the archetypal god of work, responsibility, old age, practical earthy wisdom, the ancestors, etc. As a Ruler of Aquarius Saturn also refers to the mythical Golden Age or Garden of Eden over which Old Saturn was said to preside, before the fall.
In modern times Aquarius is commonly associated with Uranus too, its ‘modern ruler’. The affiliation with Uranus would suggest those plants in the natural world with eccentric or unique forms or functions, rare or difficult to find, growing in remote inaccessible places, like Orchids for instance or ancient cycads.
Healing herbs and Plants used to alleviate high blood pressure, help circulation, clear blood vessels, heal heart conditions are also under the tutelage of Aquarius, which governs blood circulation in the physical body.

The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

In the garden, despite the rapidly diminishing Moon light, the Disseminating Phase is a productive time for growing things and also to apply slow release fertilizer. The fact that these are the last available days for planting before the Last Quarter should work as an incentive to get going. Favorite plants to grow during this first week of the waning cycle are the Perennials, Biennials and Root Crops because the Moon energy is being stored underground in anticipation of the resting period not too far ahead.

In the garden Earthy Capricorn is traditionally considered a Productive Sign, especially suitable for growing Perennials, Biennials,Trees and Vines. Any planting indeed that is meant to last a long time is well done in this earthy and reliable Sign.
It is also a good Moon transit to plant root crops like potatoes and carrots. Fertilizing, especially slow release, recommended too.

Scorpio Moon in the garden

    •

Scorpio is a Water Sign and a very fertile Sign. Everything should do well when planted in Scorpio, if the Moon is in the right phase.
Scorpio is also suitable for propagating cuttings, grafting and deep irrigation. It promotes sturdy roots reaching down deep for moisture. Corn, squashes and tomatoes seem to like particularly to be transplanted when the Moon is in Scorpio.

***

Because Scorpio is also connected to the last portion of the intestines, the rectum, herbs used to heal hemorrhoids are also linked with this Sign.

Edible Plants: Chilli, Hops, Nettle, Onions, Peppers, Pomegranate, Radish.

Healing Herbs:  Aloe, Barberry, Basil, Capers, Coriander, Don Quai, Ergot, Garlic, Gentian, Ginseng, Horseradish, Mustard, Nettle, Pennyroyal, Radishes, Sarsaparilla, Senna, Tarragon, Tobacco, Wormwood .

Tree GlyphTrees: Hawthorns, the Grumpy Oak, so called for its crooked branches, the oldest living trees in Europe. Palms are also attributed to Scorpio, due to their phallic trunk and abundance of seeds.

Flower Glyph pinkOrnamental and Flowering Plants: Anemones, Black-eyed Susan, Blackthorns, Cactus Flowers, Dark Red Flowers, Gardenias, Gentian, Heather, Holly, Rhododendrons, Scarlet Monkey, Yews. And all phallic looking flowers, like Calla Lilies

The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

In the garden the Full Moon is a great divide: before the exact phase the increasing light and surging energy are particularly good for Annuals and above the ground crops; after the phase Perennials, Biennials, Trees and Root crops are more suited. Traditionally no sowing or planting are recommended however twelve hours before or after the phase itself.  In this instance the best day would be then May 8, from 8.45 am until 5.15 pm, when the Moon enters Sagittarius. I personally like to take advantage of a great fertile Full Moon in Scorpio and sow/transplant during the whole Scorpio transit, no matter how close to the exact phase.

Healing Herbs: Some of the medicinal herbs associated with Libra are suitable to treat kidney ailments, like Elderberry, Sassafras, Black Currants etc. Also Libra herbs are Bergamot, Catnip, Corn Silk, Elderberry, Fenugreek, Lavender, Lovage, Mint, Mother of Thyme, Slippery Elm, Sorrell, St. John Worth, Strawberries Leaves, Vervain, Uva Ursi.

Tree GlyphTrees: Apple, Almond, Plum, Red Cherry, Birch, Sandalwood. Also flowering Trees. The Birch is often associated with Venus and therefore Libra. This tree often develops strange little bushes on the crown, that now we know are caused by a fungi. In the old days though, in parts of Europe, were known as ‘Witches Brooms’. This was on of the reasons the Birch was associated with the feminine archetype of Venus ! But also for its light beautiful bark, a group of such trees lightening the forest in magical ways.

Flower Glyph pinkOrnamental and Flowering Plants: Many Rose, especially White Roses and Large Roses, Bluebells, Blue Flowers, Cherry Blossoms, Columbine, Daisy, Foxglove, Hydrangeas, Mallow, Periwinkles, Poppy, Primroses, Primula, Sundews, Violet.

This Moon Phase in the garden

  • Note that the garden activities associated with the Moon Sign depend also on the cycle the Moon is in. The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

The Gibbous Moon Phase should stimulate plenty of garden activities and a sense of urgency, least one should waste the great energy available. When the Moon transits a very fertile Sign like Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, or a productive Sign like Taurus, Libra and Capricorn, plus Virgo for Medicinal Herbs, practically every plant and seed can go into the garden successfully. This is the middle of the second waxing week. Ideally, after sowing or planting leafy vegetables in the first week, we should be busy putting in those plants we grow for their fruit or seedpods (tomatoes, beans, etc.).

Plants with finely divided leaves, like carrots, fennel etc, are associated with Virgo and Gemini, because they resemble Mercury’s Airy nature. Also identified with Virgo are those medicinal plants helpful for healthy function of the brain, the nervous system and for speech related issues. As well as healing plants for improving lung function, and bowels health and regularity.

Edible Plants: Cereal Plants, Whet, Barley, Oats, Rye, Millet, Carrots, Fennel, Parsnips.

Healing Herbs: Caraway, Dill, Parsley, Fennel, Coltsfoot, Hyssop, Anise, Lemon Balm, Mullein, Marjoram, Tancy, Vervain, Lavender, Mandrake, Horebound, Licorice, Ferns. Healing Herbs traditionally collected by the road side where they grow like humble weeds are also sacrd to Virgo: example Dandelion, Wild Fennel.

Tree GlyphTrees: the trees sacred to Mercury (and therefore Virgo and Gemini) are those with airy, open canopies, also those with winged seeds, like the Elm. And some that have different texture/colour on the top and the underside of the leaves; or that display not one but two crowns (double nature of Gemini). Hazel, Elms etc.

Flower Glyph pinkOrnamental and Flowering Plants: Grasses and Sedges. Lavender, Lily of the Valley, Elecampane, Mosses, Maiden Hair Ferns, Orchids, Chrysanthemum, Lilacs, Azalea.

The First Quarter Moon Phase is the demarcation time between the first and second weeks of the Moon cycle, an important boundary, because different types of plants can now go in, those we grow for their fruit or seedpods (tomatoes, beans etc.). The Moon needs also to be transiting a Fertile or Productive Sign.

Leo Moon in the garden

Like all other Fire Signs in the garden Leo is considered too dry and barren for growing anything. Its energy is suitable for cultivating, general maintenance and harvesting. Also suitable for pest control, weeding, and pruning, best done after the Last Quarter Phase.

Today the energy could be right for being creative in the garden: painting, sculpting, playing music, performing garden plays, landscaping, designing, introducing decorative features and ornamental objects.
Of course also Garden Parties. Or, weather permitting, just basking in the sun, preferably in a hammock or really comfy easy chair.

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Trees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Leo, and also with the Sun, Leos traditional Ruler, giver of Life and Light. Medicinal Herbs and Plants associate with Sun/Leo are those that strengthen the heart and aid circulation. Also immune system boosters and all plants rich in vitamins. And herbs traditionally used to treat eye diseases or to improve vision too. *   and

Edible Plants: Citrus Fruit, in particular Oranges. Also orange or yellow vegetables, like Capsicums, Carrots, Peppers. And Walnuts.

Healing Herbs: European Angelia, Borage, Bugloss, Camomille, Centaury, Ginger, Hawthorn, Lovage, Motherwort, Eyebright, Rosemary, Rue, Saffron, Storax,  Terragon.

Tree GlyphTrees: the upright distinguished, noble Ash is often associated with the Sun and Leo. This is a tall tree often towering over smaller trees in the forest. They have a fairly open canopy that lets a lot of sunlight through, thus allowing a rich vegetation to thrive beneath. Trees with strong horizontal roots and arched crowns also belong to the Sun.

Flower Glyph pinkOrnamental and Flowering Plants:  Orange coloured flowers in general, also Asters, Celandine, Citrus Flowers, Dahlias, Heliotropes, Henna, Larkspurs, Marigold, Passion Flower, Peony, Sunflower.

Cancer Moon in the garden

    • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Trees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Cancer, and also with the Moon, Cancer’s traditional Ruler, the archetypal goddess of nurturing, fertility, home making, family and the sacred connection with our ancestors. The moon governing the tides is traditionally associated with all plants with a high water content, like Lettuce, Cucumbers, Celery, for instance. Also plants like Cereals and Rice, staple food for billions of people on earth, the Moon being the Great nurturing Mother of All. As well as plants, medicinal and otherwise, that produce a milky sap; medicinal herbs/plants used to soothe the stomach and improve digestion; and those that have a  beneficial effect on women fertility, the health of the womb and breast, and,of course, those helpful in pregnancy and during delivery.

Cancer is a Water Sign and one of the most fertile of all Signs. Everything should do well when planted in Cancer, if the Moon is in the right phase.
Cancer is also suitable for propagating cuttings, grafting and deep irrigation.

Today the energy could be right for many activities in the garden, to make our home life more productive, self sufficient and thrifty; thus fostering cooperation and a sense of belonging too.

***

Edible Plants: Lettuce, Cucumbers, Melons (Water Melons, Rock Melon), Water Cress, Celery.

Healing Herbs: Ginseng, Papaya leaf, Peppermint, Spearmint, Lemon Balm, Bay, Parsley, Aloe, Celery, Slippery Elm Bark, Evening Primrose.

Tree GlyphTrees: Laurel and all trees that produce an abundance of blossoms, like the Cherry Tree. Also those that reproduce easily by cutting or seed dispersion.

Flower Glyph pinkOrnamental and Flowering Plants: White Roses and all White Flowers, Morning Glories, Water Lily, Lotus, Southern Magnolia, Jasmine, Melon Flowers. Flowers that open up around Full Moon time are also naturally associated with the Moon, like the Datura sweet smelling and dangerous Devil’s Trumpets, known in India as Moon Flowers. This common name is also used for numerous other flowering plants that bloom during the night, from evening to dawn, like the Evening Primrose; the Crimson Red Nymphaea (Lotus) the Night Gladiolus; the Night Jasmine; the Casablanca Lily, fragrant flowers used for wedding bouquets and in perfumery; the Moon Flower of family Ipomonea (same as Morning Glory), beautiful large white flowers; Lady of the Night; Princess of the Night; Some Cactus and Succulent Flowers, all night blooming.

In the garden this is an excellent growing time: everything can go in now, but in particular leafy vegetables and all plants that we grow for their above the ground parts, but only when the Moon is transiting through the very fertile Water Signs or the productive Signs Taurus, Libra and Capricorn.

Taurus Moon in the garden

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Tees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Taurus, and also with Venus, Taurus’ traditional Ruler, the archetypal goddess of love, pleasure, beauty, harmony. The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

The New Moon Phase is traditionally a time to begin sowing and planting because the increasing Moon light will help plants to emerge and flourish. Moisture becomes more and more available as the light of the Moon intensifies, up to the Full Moon. Traditionally however no sowing or planting are recommended within twelve hours of the phase itself.

Everything can go in now, but in particular leafy vegetables and all plants that we grow for their above the ground parts, but only when the Moon is transiting through the very fertile Water Signs or the productive Signs Taurus, Libra and Capricorn.

With this particular Taurus New Moon occurring at 12.45 pm local time on Thursday, April 23, it would be better to start the recommended garden activities on Friday, April 24, continuing on Saturday, April 25, until 5.19 pm, when the Moon will enter Non Fertile Gemini.
